"We're Coming to America"

That's right, Neil, we're coming home . . .

The zippers on our pants aren't nearly as easy to close as they were at the onset of our trip, likewise for the suitcases, and our weary bodies are yearning for the comforts of familiar pillows and beds! Kara misses her friends intensely, Garry is ready to come back and attack those pesky Fair Oaks squirrels in our backyard, Kim is restless to get back to her classroom, and Kristen . . . well, Danny has never been away from her thoughts but she's eager to have those text messages and emails soon replaced by his presence! Jordan and Tyler, our family will be complete again tomorrow when at least we're all back in the same state . . .

Even so, as we wake up this morning to a beautiful sunrise over Zurich as the city comes to life, it's with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Europe. We've been blessed with a trip that has transformed our lives (you're right, Cam!) and we will look back on this time together fondly.

Time to go, I'm feeling surprising emotional as I close . . . it's off to New York for a last little bit of sightseeing following a long 9 hour flight. Tomorrow it's back on a plane to San Francisco - thanks to Kim Lee for picking us up :) Can't wait to see you and get back to our home turf!

Amazing Switzerland...

Most likely our last post since we've just checked out of our B&B, with another couple of trains to catch as we make our way to Zurich this evening. (Oops, Kristen just told me we do have internet tonight, too, so that claim of being our last post was a bit premature!) . . .

It's been such a memorable few days here in Wengen, punctuated by yesterday's hike. As you can see by the pictures, that tram was indeed a challenge. Even being terrified, Kristen managed to make it up to the summit - which made the top even more welcome and spectacular. The rest of the afternoon was filled with a beautiful trail, majestic sky, and breathtaking views . . . all the while we were listening to the enchanting cowbells from throughout the mountain valley. How can those same obnoxious cowbells from Arco Arena sound so sweet?!? Finishing up our hike, eating our picnic lunch while looking out over the valley and the little town of Grindelwald far below, we made our way to the train station for our descent back into Wengen. WOW, what an afternoon . . .

Just when we thought the day was complete and we couldn't imagine it getting much better, we came down to dinner here at the Baren Inn. Without attempting to describe it, since I've already used every superlative I know when talking about these past few weeks, I'll just say that our dinner ranks in our TOP FIVE of all time . . . maybe even TOP - and that was a unanimous decision, even endorsed by our somewhat finicky girls! : )

It's off to the train station . . . more from Zurich later!

More memories to share!

Yes, that's the tram that we ALL survived on the ride up!

Stroll back to our cozy B&B in Switzerland.

No this isn't Disneyland...it's the real thing in Germany!

Okay, so they're holding Mom and Dad's...they still enjoyed(?!) a sip!

Hello from Switzerland!

Tuesday morning in Wengen, Switzerland
Had the best of intentions to keep writing more when we were back in Munich, but each day ended by rolling into the early morning of the next and I just couldn't manage to keep awake long enough to sit up and type . . . doesn't mean we're lacking on things to tell you and memories to share, that's for sure.
Since we're about to go and spend the day on an adventurous hike (thanks Kim for putting us in touch with Rhonda) I'll keep this brief . . .

Saturday in Dachau: powerful, unforgettable, educational. Lucked out and got a tourguide with both a thorough understanding of the history and a sensitivity/respect for the events that enabled us to learn more in those 3 hours than we could've ever gotten from a book. Sobering, tragic, hopeful.

Saturday evening at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich for late-night dinner: joyous, oompah music, beer, and great fun. Followed up by a long walk back to our hotel along the streets of downtown Munich with all kinds of entertaining nightlife, including a performer who loved the fact that we were Americans. Ask Kristen for more details!!

Sunday at Neuschwanstein Castle (the one used as a model for Disneyland!): BEAUTIFUL!!, fairytale, rainy, best views of the trip. Striking contrast to yesterday's outing . . . Back to Munich at 10PM and late-night dinner. Wow, what a weekend.

Monday: travel day on the trains (4 of them by the time we got here). Lovely scenery throughout Bavaria and into Switzerland. Will never forget rounding the curve on the train and seeing the majestic snowy Alps ahead . . . how many "unforgettable" experiences can we hold onto?!? Late night apple streudel at a little cafe along the mainstreet here in Wengen (Dean, Jon and Jeff, you should see the watches here!) Walked back to our place under the stars and chilly temps. Romantic!! (Oh Danny, does Kristen ever miss you!)

Tuesday: So now we're caught up. It's off to the Coop to get picnic supplies for our hike, then up the "lift" to the top of the mountain to start our day-long hike. Kim and Kristen not so sure about the steep, steep gondola . . . Kristen is terrifed actually, she describes it as "a box on the end of a string, dangling over the Alps" . . .

It's our last full day of uninterrupted Europe, we're going to make the most of it!

More adventures!

(Happy Birthday Chip!!)

A rainy Saturday morning in Munich, Garry and I at the laundromat while the girls are back catching up on a bit of needed sleep!

When last we wrote there was one more morning ahead of us in Italy, then our journey to Austria to arrive that afternoon . . . we had it all planned out. As we're learning on this trip, every day brings the unexpected and the unforgettable and that Thursday was not to disappoint us - oh, the magic of traveling!!

"Rise and shine" went the wake up call that Thursday morning, up early for another homemade breakfast by Emanuelle at our B&B. The "rise" part was a bit challenging for the two youngest K's, however not as difficult as the "shine" command for the Venice sun! Convinced that a little rain waS NOT going to interfere with our plans, we set off for the train station in our now-familiar brigade - each of us in charge of our carry-on bag and a backpack. Walking the 1/2 mile over to the train station, with a full hour to go before departure and just a drizzle to contend with, made us feel smugly confident. We'd become such veteran travelers, or so we thought . . .

Ooops, what happened to that train we were supposed to take? That departure simply didn't exist on the message board at the station, instead it was replaced with a bus logo ?!? Ok, no worries - off to find the bus (that would then take us to the connecting train in 3 hours). If only someone at one of the FIVE ticket counters could've given us help that we could follow, we might've managed to find that bus before the monsoon blew in!! After finally finding another American family who shared the same frustration we were feeling, we found the right spot for the bus. Slight problem, all seats on the bus were taken - next connecting bus was not to leave for 5 hours, we lost our reservations on the connecting train to Austria, and the bus driver didn't think there were any open seats on that next bus either. To add to our drama, the wind and rain were now howling and we were without umbrellas (I know, Lucienne, I should've listened to your advice re: umrellas!), Kim's need for food was growing increasingly noticeable (can you say FDS, Mr. Lee??), and we had to walk nearly a mile back to buy tickets at the SAME TRAIN STATION that had previously told us to go over to the bus WITHOUT the needed tickets! After waiting in another line there for 45 minutes, we were helped by an incredibly kind ticket seller who managed to find our cherished 4 seats on the later bus!!! With that good news under our belts, we set off to find the much-needed food outside the train station . . . and back into the storm (complete with thunder and lightning by now!) Thankfully we were able to buy a couple of umbrellas, and then made our way back to the B&B we'd checked out of to store our bags and scrounge up some plastic trash bags to put over the girls and protect the backpacks with laptops inside. Now soaked to the bone (will try and attach a picture) and covered with garbage-bag ponchos we were definitely the conspicuous American travelers!! The happy ending to our story is that we had a crazy bus ride out of Venice and Italy in the pelting rain into Austria (didn't know buses could go that fast and squeeze through such narrow tunnels RIGHT NEXT To those huge trucks), followed by a lovely evening train ride into Salzburg. We had the entire firstclass car to ourselves for that 1 1/2 hour ride through the magnificent Austrian Alps, complete with castles and charming cottages out the windows!! All I could do to stop myself from belting out a few bars of "The Hills Are Alive" but, as you all know I'm no match for Julie Andrews - plus our Sound Of Music tour was still to come the next day!
After arriving in Salzburg we were ready to tackle our next rain-soaked trek to find our hotel - and the lure of McDonalds at 11:00PM (complete with ice in our drinks!) was too tempting to resist. Needless to say, by the time our heads hit the pillow that night we were zonked and we slept well with so many new memories to savor . . .

Friday in Salzburg did not disappoint - starting off with our Sound of Music tour. Does it get much better than that? Traveling through the charming town of Salzburg, visiting so many of the places where the movie was filmed, while listening to the soundtrack piping through the bus ... Wow! Jordan and Tyler, and be thankful you were spared the embarrassment of your mom singing along - especially when I serenaded Kara with "You Are Sixteen Going on Seventeen" . . . it was just too fitting. The apple streudel we devoured (in the little cafe next to the church where Maria and the Captain got married - and there was a couple getting married!!) was served by a waitress who looked just like Meredith Lee (yes, we have pictures to prove it!) and was one of our favorite treats so far. After leaving the tour, and having to pry mom off the bus, we set out to explore the massive Hohensalzburg Fortress overlooking the town. Tyler, add this to your "bucket list!" With our next train leaving at 5:00 we knew we had to maximize our few hours there and we did the very best we could. The Funicular up the steep, steep cliff into the castle was enough to send Kim and Kristen to the floor so we didn't have to look out and see how high we were going and how fast!! The actual fortress was very cool but we couldn't linger since the clock was ticking. A return trip to Salzburg (maybe even in winter) will be a must!!

Off to the train station, again, this time for our trip into Germany. The accomodations on the trains are fabulous, thanks to those of you who advised to travel firstclass - pretty nice way to travel. The views out the spacious train windows were beautiful throughout Germany, even as the rain continued. Once we got in, and found a Starbucks for Garry (there were none in Italy - oh no!) we managed to find our way to the hotel here. Soon after arriving, Kristen's friend Linda (from UCSB last summer) met us here. We're so happy to see her, and it's comforting to know she'll be with us through the weekend. For dinner last night we asked her to help us find an "authentic German restaurant" and after a lively conversation in German with our concierge, she hit the bullseye! THe Beer Garden was full of loud and jovial Germans, inspiring us to try some new German dishes. Danny, you'd have been proud of Kristen trying some goulash - she loved it! On the other hand, Kara's potato salad tasted nothing like any potato salad we'd ever had before - but the huge salty brezels (pretzels) made her happy, too. Strolling back to the hotel in the light, cool rain was the perfect cap to another incredible day.

Time to move the clothes into the dryer, then off to Dachau Concentration Camp. Should be quite a day . . . will write more later since we'll have wi-fi tomorrow.
Auf Wiedersehen!

Musings from Venice . . .

Rather than going on-and-on with narrative, here are some highlights of our most unforgettable moments since last we wrote yesterday evening, thinking that our action-packed day of hiking to Monterossa was about to close (how wrong we were!) . . .
  • gelato down at the Mediterranean watching the "locals" play their 11 pm water polo game under the stars on a warm summer evening . . .
  • countless encounters with the enchanting natives in Vernazza, both the very young children playing together in the piazza till midnight and the colorful older folks alongside (but way too many speedos than we care to mention!)
  • the cool breeze off the ocean as we lazily relaxed while Kara hatched her plan on how to meet the cute waiter from the previous night's dinner . . .
  • finally saying goodbye to Lars and Anna (our newlywed friends from Seattle) and reluctantly heading back up to our cozy retreat, but wait . .
  • Kara and Kristen (the parent-appointed chaperone) invited to join the cute waiter and his friends (none nearly as cute as you, Danny) at the bar !?!?!?!?
  • Kara's short-lived romance with Simon (due to mom and dad's return to the scene), but not before being capped with a kiss!!!!
  • 4 hours of sleep later, an early morning train to Bologna, then another to Venice
  • checking into this very cool B&B we have all to ourselves for the next two days, complete with wi-fi (thus the long-winded writing!)
  • exploring the labyrinth of calles through the town, finding yet another fabulous restaurant to tempt our tastebuds (yummy sardines for starters)
  • another late-night hike, this time across canals and over bridges getting hopelessly lost but not minding a bit!
  • more gelato
  • tired legs but happy hearts (especially Kara's!)
One more day ahead of us in Italy - only wish you all were here to enjoy this with us. We're having such a good time but Dorothy was right, "there's no place like home . . ." Time to finish up and fall asleep listening to the breeze blow in through the shuttered windows up here on the second floor. We thank our blessings for this trip, but mostly for each of you . . .

An exhilarating 2 hour hike up to Monterosso; Dad's 3 favorite "ponies!"

No, this isn't a postcard . . . we really took this! : )

Monday Night In Vernazza!

Having spent the last 2 days in the quaint little town of Vernazza, part of the Cinque Terre, we've fallen in love with this part of Italy. If Rome was all about history and the beauty of ancient Italy, Cinque Terre matches it with it's own charm and many, many memories for the Orsolini's. We don't want to miss another minute of our last evening here . . . we're about to take a stroll down to the castle at the beach and then climb in to bed in our very own Swiss Family Robinson bed and breadfast jewel so we can wake up early in the morning to catch our train to Venice! Will write more from there, soon! And pictures!
