Tuesday morning in Wengen, Switzerland
Had the best of intentions to keep writing more when we were back in Munich, but each day ended by rolling into the early morning of the next and I just couldn't manage to keep awake long enough to sit up and type . . . doesn't mean we're lacking on things to tell you and memories to share, that's for sure.
Since we're about to go and spend the day on an adventurous hike (thanks Kim for putting us in touch with Rhonda) I'll keep this brief . . .
Saturday in Dachau: powerful, unforgettable, educational. Lucked out and got a tourguide with both a thorough understanding of the history and a sensitivity/respect for the events that enabled us to learn more in those 3 hours than we could've ever gotten from a book. Sobering, tragic, hopeful.
Saturday evening at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich for late-night dinner: joyous, oompah music, beer, and great fun. Followed up by a long walk back to our hotel along the streets of downtown Munich with all kinds of entertaining nightlife, including a performer who loved the fact that we were Americans. Ask Kristen for more details!!
Sunday at Neuschwanstein Castle (the one used as a model for Disneyland!): BEAUTIFUL!!, fairytale, rainy, best views of the trip. Striking contrast to yesterday's outing . . . Back to Munich at 10PM and late-night dinner. Wow, what a weekend.
Monday: travel day on the trains (4 of them by the time we got here). Lovely scenery throughout Bavaria and into Switzerland. Will never forget rounding the curve on the train and seeing the majestic snowy Alps ahead . . . how many "unforgettable" experiences can we hold onto?!? Late night apple streudel at a little cafe along the mainstreet here in Wengen (Dean, Jon and Jeff, you should see the watches here!) Walked back to our place under the stars and chilly temps. Romantic!! (Oh Danny, does Kristen ever miss you!)
Tuesday: So now we're caught up. It's off to the Coop to get picnic supplies for our hike, then up the "lift" to the top of the mountain to start our day-long hike. Kim and Kristen not so sure about the steep, steep gondola . . . Kristen is terrifed actually, she describes it as "a box on the end of a string, dangling over the Alps" . . .
It's our last full day of uninterrupted Europe, we're going to make the most of it!
Kim, your chronicling of your adventures is exactly what we're working toward in our Writer's Workshop training. I'm so glad you're having this amazing, transformative experience. There's nothing like travel to enrich your lives. We miss you and can't wait 'till you're home!
ReplyDeleteJust a random fact. That castle you went to (the one used to model Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland) is also the castle where Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was filmed during the parts where no children are allowed. Kinda crazy! =) Glad you all are having so much fun!
